In the world of appearances the stakes always seem existential even over minor things as if will or desire aimed at fullness of being, at an enduring state. This perhaps because of the awareness of death lurking in the background of everything for which time is an essential component. The difference between life and death lends definition to all attainments, all of the resting punctuations of desire. This difference is not the same as the ontological difference however the latter may be conceived, but it is readily confused with it and this adds an odd glow to things, as if metaphysical weight were added to things fragile and weightless.
