Substance and subject, etymologically they are almost the same word yet we take them as pointing to two diametrically opposed unknown realities, the transcendent and immanent thing(s) in themselves what is the outside of representation and what is inside of any presentable inside. These are perhaps no more than alternative, and historically contingent, declension of 'sub', of under-ness. Every direction we seek for this is a false trail, but the haunting by the idea of the hidden and primordial background is unavoidable.
