The ego is ephemeral being an identification with whatever the present edge of desire has brought forth. Its fear of death is not a case of two realities in relation, but again a momentary expression of a certain understanding of life, of a desire that there be more such moments. The framing of experience which shapes it as a series of discrete happenings is another way that this fear of death is expressed, giving birth to a whole culture, a science, a technology. The ego in this sense is steeped in death, is a continual perishing, which is also its joy and if fully realised, gone to the end of, would find it had already vanished.
