Disinterest, detachment are hidden factors in all the noble emotions that most realise being in the world, ambition, ethical and political passion, romantic aspiration and so on. This is seen in their near variants of irony, cynicism, perversity, addiction. All of these have something metaphysical about them; they set it to work, obviating any possibility of its 'pathological' employment, which would be precisely to do nothing.
