The phrase 'background consciousness' makes it seem as if it another kind of consciousness, one that brings about the space for the ordinary consciousness to appear. Where the latter has a subject-object-act structure, say, the former does not, is unified and is identical with its own ground. In fact there are not two different consciousness, but the ubiquity of spatial metaphors makes the idea hard to resist. It's the same consciousness but seen in two different ways - to say that would be to repeat the error. Ordinary consciousness does not work unless there is something beside it which stands for the whole, just as you cannot have a word without a language. But ordinary consciousness is what it is by excluding the whole, by setting the whole as impossible, so it pretends there is another consciousness which is the whole, even if this notion yokes together mutually contradictory elements.
