Disavowal goes deeper than, say the apostle Peter's denial. You are in one situation and you are this way, and then you are in another situation and you are someone else entirely. There is a calculation, an automatic avoidance of danger or difficulty, but you do not blush at this, you are not aware of the contradiction in which you are entangled. Where you have been consistent is in the way you have fitted in with what is taken as being before you (although this is an interpretation, not entirely your own), and if there is also an accompanying disquiet, this too is constant over the different situations and is seen as your sensitivity to the existential uncertainty of being. By choosing to hold these indefinite continuities in the periphery of your awareness, you can proceed with a semblance of good faith. The contents of the mind are not like furniture, they don't just lie around, some closer in and some further away, some in focus and some out of focus, some in this room and some in the next room, and so on. Mental contents - a misleading phrase at best - are interested and inherently intersubjective, even if their other, the one for whom they are a response, is entirely implicit. And being so they are such as support the kind of intermittences described as disavowal - say absence with absent intent. The kind of subject-laden forces in play are difficult to name.
