In wanting to set out from the distinctive particularity of sensory experience he adopted as an axiom the understanding that no here is better for this purpose than any other here. He was referring in this way to a fully situated moment of experience such as could be isolated in reflection, and placing the emphasis on its geographic character. More or less ravishing experiences are available but the basic nature of experience must be the equally revealed in every case, and so a dependence on specific qualities is a sign that the inessential has been taken as central. Again, he asked himself, why was it felt that the grain of things needed to be spoken about, or spoken for, or spoken to, or even just described? As if speech is always stuttering and stumbling over a meaning, it was not the sound, but the meaning that was at stake.
