Certain encounters filled with delicacy and unexpected windows onto another life charmed him and made him feel less alone. Later, invaded by an univited and unreliable lucidity these would recur on him as a stumbling of destinies, the trespass of one propriety on another. Beneath a veneer of knowingness a maximal blindness, and beneath that blindness a maximal exposure to the light; this was the harsh and madly sought for reality beneath the ideal of knowing and being known.
