There are many different self-referential phenomena or plays, from self to the various kinds of subject, subjectivity and subjection to ego to identification and so on. Any one of them can easily be undone or dismantled but only so that another formation can gain in prominence. They all partake of self-ness or of self-stuff and there is no other species within experience lacking in this quality that they can be constructed out of The core of such self-ness is highly abstract from the point of view of grammatical reflection, but otherwise ought to be of the most concrete. Whether such self-ness requires memory, history or some form of identity, or even consciousness is unclear, but most probably it does not. One simply mistakes the secondary for the primary. The Heideggerian term 'Er-eignis' or 'en-ownment' suggests itself.
