On one side there is the unknown source of all of this, because it must come out of somewhere, of something. It is its being, but the word now to be understood in a very immediate and lively way and not as some dull substance. On the other side there is the peculiar subject-object, fleeting and mercurial since its very nature is a contradiction, but surprisingly constant and unified over time, exactly the same immediately recognisable 'thing', really a sort of refractive illusion that always appears at exactly the same near distance from the true subject. There is a connection between these two 'metaphysicals' - perhaps they are even identical - but its precise nature remains mysterious.
