You don't experience time as flowing at least outside of certain kinds of intoxication or pain. Many things, maybe most things, depend on perception of a structure or gesture in time but this is not mediated by way of retentions sinking away into a mist of undifferentiated pastness, as in a pool of dirty water. Perception in time is jerky, as if the complete image is received very rapidly at the onset and causes attention to lock onto it holding it steadily until it is fully revealed at which point it loosens its hold and attention goes to the next complete object. It is more like a process of prediction updating which  energetically mediates an unperceivable flow to an experiencing that is not at home in time. The mind is like a space-suit that enables a Platonic self to survive in a hostile chaotic environment and even to thrive by being enabled to apply its timeless recollections.
