Mimetic desire, like having an opinion, points to a fundamental flaw in this type of consciousness. They seem innocent and even necessary at inception, yielding a syntonic kind of pleasure, activating and bracing the whole system, but at the same time determining their sequels in a deadly manner, like a game that becomes all too real. They are both symmetric form of according reality to the other and the self. You can start from either end, imagining that these are opposed, but then find that you are played to the same central impasse.
