In physical reality the boundary that is your skin marks the separation between two very different but interdependent regimes of sense, the world of outer perception and the world of inner feeling. Both of these worlds and their relations are entirely within consciousness, which is something quite different from your mind. This personalised but objective physical reality is itself embedded in a larger 'space' of meaning. The physical being only a certain class of meaning, subject to certain rigid rules, and endowed with a certain implacable generativity, but which loses its clear outlines when seen from a distance within a larger field of possibility. It is only in this larger field that the strange sensitive organism that is the self-system can be glimpsed like a diaphanous sea creature expanding and contracting peristaltically as it weaves its way through the sovereign element which is both itself and not itself.
