To seek a revelation of your core self by following the subtlest twists of desire as it passes in and out through your body and the bodies of others, is perhaps inevitable once you have accepted the idea of a core self. Desire is splendidly ironic since if and when you attain its goal it deserts you, it only existed as the vehicle for elsewhere-ness; it generates mirages which turn back and mock you when you have landed at the place you thought they were, and the sophisticated response is to pretend to share the joke, to celebrate the joker. Such is the new god to which we have entrusted ourselves. What is more interesting is the family of ideas to which core self, admittedly somewhat crude, belongs. Surely you can grow in self-understanding, can learn to chose your desires more carefully? Can desire only truth? Do you wish to make peace with life, with death, with the process that calmly oversees your destruction? Well, why not, there are so many quests on offer, so many high points to stop and take a selfie, beam it out, but you can't escape the conviction that this is just what Pascal would have called leaving your room.
