Primary narcissism is another name for that initiating will to life, the stock of negative entropy (re)created at birth. It is absolutely unthinking, groundless entitlement to desire, being centred before there is a centre. Blank, yet ready to unfold into endless specificity. It is not energy, since that is renewed from day to day, but some deeper potency which enables the energy to be organised, to bring about organisation; it enables the work of the soul. Something about this is instantly transmissible, to see it is to know it, and to find it already installed either this side or that side of the self. Just look at any commercials, or indeed any of our entertainment - they still haven't decided whether this side or that side sells better. As selves are atomised, framed as autonomous, all art becomes this kind of assertion of presence, of the virtue of putting all your weight and more into secular presence. The dialectic only of ego and id. Desire has broken free of culpability, has become the law. But the role of law should be to impersonally oppose or mediate desire; what can ground law now, when law itself is interpreted on behalf of desire?
