The distinctive quality of consciousness is a newness, a freshness in the midst of the most familiar and habitual, inward novelty and outward familiarity, or novelty with respect to an entirely different sense of time. Time has at least two independent directions, although the others, the non-historical ones you might say, of them are deeply concealed. Only the 'now' is a common point.
