At the core of being a conscious self is the quality of disclosure, of the immediate relation to the truth of whatever attention is directed upon, even if that truth is misinterpreted or misunderstood in the moment that follows after. The phenomenological frame, interpretation immanent to consciousness, can be taken as more immediate and so closer to truth that the transcendent interpretation, according to the 'natural attitude', or perhaps it ought to be the other way around, but the question is at least worthy of, and potentially able to be resolved by investigation. These framings are modes of belief, or of meta-belief, and as such are vulnerable to an infernal re-interpretation in which everything is a deception, or a simulation etc. The knowledge that is sought is, however, of a kind which rules out such re-interpretation, and hence must have no dependence on belief at all.
