Something like a 'mirror stage', a constitution of the image of the self, or rather the self as image, can only build on a prior individuation without image or reflection, the answering of a call by an act of will, a deliberate and chosen action - the sense of a doing, however imprecise, in response to an expectation from the outside, from an other. How is that expectation is understood, as such, without any symbolisation? Will communicating directly with will. 'Will' is the only term we have for such an immediacy in which subject and object are not yet separated.
