If you would understand yourself by way of personal history you would also need to understand any personal history by way of the dark abysses of human history, a context which exposes the almost infinite cost in suffering that has been paid for every fleeting achievement of sweetness and equanimity. There are no concepts that are adequate to take account of this, of the why and the wherefore.
