Materialism is the view in which the basis of all relationship is indifference, that is, that the elements to which all interpreted events are finally reduced bear no imprint or memory of those events and can therefore be reused for any other random interpretation, just as the elements of matter in a compound can be isolated and used to form part of any other compound. And so, if relationships are somehow more metaphysically real and more stable that the contingent things which they relate then idealism must be the final truth.
