There is a sharper solution of continuity between lifeless matter and life in general than there is between the latter and self-reflective consciousness. But just as life with its wild and infinitely extending intelligence can be seen as a venture out beyond the boundaries of the self-organising propensities of matter, already fertile in wonders, so consciousness can be seen in us as hurling itself beyond the borders of life. Where is it trying to get to, whence comes the conviction that there is anything beyond its all embracing matrix?
