The idea that consciousness is the fullest expression or representative of the underlying reality has its greatest obstacle not in matter, in the things that furnish the world, but in life itself as the immediate substrate of its own expression. The sheer wildness of life embracing every extreme both positive and negative that is conceivable is of a quality quite alien to the constructions of consciousness as it turns on itself.
