The restless quality of the psyche whose law is 'I am not what I am, and am what I am not' - or is that better stated with 'that' in place of 'what'? - runs deep but is nevertheless superficial. This superficiality being itself another law of the psychic - 'I think therefore I seem'. None of this would be possible without something serene and unmoving from which it draws its forces and to which only systematic negations can apply. To enter through the narrow gate of appearance you must split in two.
