These atoms or kernels of stories, or situational elements can combine together in very many different ways. At the simplest level this consists of linear or tree-like patterns, but almost as fundamental are oppositions, splittings and mergings of point of view and story within a story. Or again the openings of onion-like layers of context and the reversal of object/context relations. The awareness of the story-like nature of experience becoming an element of new stories. All of the patterns we find in surrealism and dream add to the possibilities. Why does this fascinate so much? Eventually all of the ways in which story elements can be combined becomes a totality which again forms a new kind of story. The cacophany grows so loud that you are forced out of the picture, but that too is a story.
