There can be no understanding of consciousness without its also being an understanding of time, since both consciousness is in time, is subjected to time and time is in consciousness, is constituted by its internal self-differing. Because of this double containment it is impossible for consciousness to be rotated in time. It it were rotated in outer time, so that say, it lay along the rays of meaning instead of cross-sectionally through them, then its inner time would rotate through the same angle and all would be as before. And yet consciousness yearns to free itself from time. The so-called block-universe in which time is one parameter of a complete structure is only the idea of a world without consciousness, an ideal that only a consciousness could imagine.
