Isn't there a direct line from Joyce's epiphanies, which already have a respectable lineage in post-Romantic, Romantic and earlier art, to today's facebook posts and instagrams? "Kalopismata orphnes" as Michelstaedter would have called them, ornaments of obscurity, precisely in their intention to assert an overcoming of obscurity, and intention of light. But what starts out as light becomes dark. To indicate a point of light is also to indicate the dark which surrounds it, to mark a moment of being is also to render indispensable the sheer waste before and after it, to assert is to admit the possibility of denial and hence to deny. Well, whatever this is it has nothing to do with epiphanies, these moments are neither full nor empty, but are always inadequate, they would collapse under the weight of dialectic. They are moments on the way when both the way and the wayfarer are knowingly obscure.
