The storm of need that produces personalisation, or that aggravated quality known as taking things personally, in what climate system does it arise? Whatever it is it is no less in place, no less the very atmosphere, in fine weather as in foul, and perhaps like a real climate system it is too hard to understand using only first principles - even if these are otherwise true and adequate. The best we can do at a macroscopic scale is to note some correlations and develop some heuristics for dealing with situations. This is where the pathetic fallacy is as close to literal truth as you can get, or else it ought to be reversed. That sudden change in tonality, the whispering chorus whose dull polyphony resolves into repetitions of some such phrase as 'why has this happened to me?' only sounds like the rush of the wind in a bare place to a mind wishing to escape its relentless confinement. But the figure of thought highlights the unpredictable way these phenomena gather and something about their energetics, how they have to rage to blow themselves out, and the odd hollowness that follows, as if the stage has been suddenly deserted. Then what can be done? Go to the centre of it and try to float, assimilate it to your own will and release it into stillness? But here even the stillness is an action against a prior force, a restlessness in the heart, a constant tipping force without motion or aim, the root of passion and desire.
