The sharp tang of our dividedness, the sheer enjoyment of the rifflings of otherness against our senses, the taste of the world when we are in possession of ourselves and know we are adequate to it, all of this takes place against a background of formless unity which is both prior to - oceanic - and successive upon - entropic - differences. We long for it and fear it, as it is both beautiful and sublime. Music can embody this strange duality of emotions, the intense nostalgia and the terror, the nostalgia for the terrifying and the terror of what is most longed for, and it points to the fact that the two extremes merge into each other without any need to dissolve a paradox. These realisations arise when the world is in motion, rising or falling, but at the peak and at the trough of each wave there is a moment of total stillness that speaks of something else entirely.
