Psychology, not the discipline but the topology and causal escapement of inner states he found reliably unreliable. A machine in perfect order it nonetheless delivered unwelcome surprises; releases in one area were always accompanied by checks in two or three others. From the point of view of the thinker on the treadmill it all seemed hopelessly misaligned and he had the dismal feeling of being in some way responsible for it. From a different point of view all of  this indicated that the machine was doing its job perfectly, since its sole purpose, after taking in all of the data, was to make things seem almost perfectly real.
